First-time homelessness rises in Treasure Valley due to lack of affordable housing

August 2024 · 2 minute read

Over 300 Treasure Valley families experienced homelessness for the first time this year, according to CATCH, a local Housing First nonprofit.

There are currently more than 1,700 households experiencing homelessness in the Treasure Valley. While some individuals and families are living in emergency shelters like Interfaith Sanctuary or the Boise Rescue Mission, CATCH says over 900 people experiencing homelessness live in places like personal vehicles or on the streets.

"There are many complex circumstances like domestic violence, trauma, economic hardship, poverty, mental health issues and more that can lead to housing instability," said CATCH Director of Housing Services Jeremy Blades. "However, all things considered, the lack of affordable housing options continues to be the biggest barrier to long-term housing stability."

CATCH's database shows domestic violence is the number one cause of family homelessness. Additionally, 39 percent of people experiencing homelessness have an income, and 28 percent have disability status.

To assist housing nonprofits like CATCH, the Home Partnership Foundation is hosting its 13th annual Avenues for Hope Housing Challenge, a statewide online fundraiser from Dec. 12-31. The annual fundraiser has provided $12.2 million for 116 housing-related nonprofits and school districts throughout Idaho.

On average, it costs $12,000 for CATCH to end homelessness for a Treasure Valley family. The price includes a security and damage deposit to the landlord or property management partner, the first month's rent and utilities, and rental assistance based on the family's income.

CATCH says families graduate from their program within 12 months on average, taking on the cost of living, and that over 80% of families remain stably housed a year later.
